Wine Tasting and Book Reading from Humanity at Stake

Ever try explaining Taiwan-China cross-strait relations to a non-Taiwanese or non-Asian friend? How about discussing it with friends from mainland China? Ever wish for an opportunity to discuss such issues with your friends of different backgrounds?

Abraham Young, author and NATMA 2G member, recounts his personal experience in his new book: Humanity at Stake. During NATMA 2G - NYC's November Wine Tasting event, you will have an opportunity to hear him read excerpts from his book and to participate in an informal discussion regarding cross-strait relations. We encourage our members to bring at least one friend who would like to learn more about Taiwan-China cross-strait relations. In addition, guests with potentially contrasting viewpoints are encouraged to attend. We hope that the evening will be filled with lively, friendly discussion among open-minded New Yorkers.

A Living Room Concert is an important complement to Asian-Pacific American Heritage Month. While other annual events in the line-up of APAHM strive to promote cultural understanding and appreciation about our Asian heritage, this Concert will allow us to celebrate current Asian American individuals who have been able to traverse the obstacles of reconciling passion and social expectations. Concurrently, A Living Room Concert will also create a unique occasion for music and entertainment, as well as the arts at large, to be discussed in an Asian American context.

Join Cynthia Lin for casual coffeehouse-type gathering where an informal discussion can occur after her performance to talk about the challenge of balancing school and your passion. We also hope that this event can address the meaning of being an Asian American artist in the music/entertainment industry of today.

About Cynthia Lin:
Drawing comparisons to Ella Fitzgerald, Joni Mitchell, and Jeff Buckley, NYC-based singer-songwriter Cynthia Lin combines a love for retro jazz with the lyrical poetry of acoustic folk. "Betelnut Girls" Exhibit by Annamarie Ho in NYC

Annamarie Ho is a Taiwanese American artist in New York who created a conceptual art exhibit around Taiwanese betelnut stands. She graduated with an MFA from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2005. This exhibit debuted in 2006.

Betelnut, a mild stimulant, is consumed throughout Asia; only in Taiwan, however, is it sold by binlang xi shi, scantily-clad girls in glass booths found on street corners and highways, catering to a clientele consisting primarily of working-class men. Binlang Xi Shi (Betelnut Girls) recreates one of these booths with a hired actress playing the role of the betelnut girl.

Lisa Chen was born in Taipei, Taiwan. She earned a BA from the University of California, Berkeley, and an MFA from the University of Iowa. Her work has been published in Hanging Loose, ZZYZVA, Prairie Schooner, and Threepenny Review. She works as a media and communications consultant for progressive organizations and campaigns.

Kelly Zen-Yie Tsai is a Chicago-born, Brooklyn-based Chinese Taiwanese American spoken word artist who has featured at over 275 performances worldwide including three seasons of "HBO Def Poetry." She was the recipient of a 2007 New York Foundation for the Arts Urban Artist Initiative NYC Fellowship and a 2004 Illinois Arts Council Governor's International Exchange Award. Her current projects include her hip hop theater solo show "The Grieving Room," spoken word videos to spark political dialogue via viral media, and a cybermedia project integrating spoken word into mixed-reality platforms.

The Taiwanese American Next Generation (TANG) program is actually part of a larger organization known as TACEC (Taiwanese American Conference - East Coast). TANG is a great way to meet fellow Taiwanese brothers and sisters and form friendships that will last a lifetime. Our program currently consists of four rotating themes: family, identity, community, and politics. This year's theme is "Family Matters."
